A home diffuser is one of the simplest ways to scent a room. Some need a tank of water and regular cleaning. Others need neither. This guide explains the two main types and what to check before you buy in the UK.
The two main types of home diffuser
An ultrasonic diffuser mixes a few drops of oil with water and vibrates it into a cool mist. It gives a softer scent, adds a little humidity and needs regular cleaning.
A waterless diffuser, also called a nebulising diffuser, turns pure oil into a fine mist without diluting it in water. The scent is stronger and more direct. The trade-off is that you get through oil faster than you would with an ultrasonic model.
What to check before you buy
- Battery life. A rechargeable diffuser can sit anywhere in the house. Check how many hours you get from one charge.
- Intensity settings. Being able to turn the scent up or down matters, especially in a small room.
- Noise. If it will run in a bedroom or home office, look for one that works quietly.
- Room size. Most compact diffusers suit small and medium spaces such as hallways, bathrooms and studies.
- Cleaning. Diffusers without a water tank usually need very little upkeep.
- Oil cost and choice. Check the price of refills and how many scents you can choose from.
Fragrance oils or essential oils?
Essential oils come from plants, for example lavender or lemon. Fragrance oils are blended scents, such as clean linen or baby powder. Many people keep a few of each and change them with the season or the room.
